Back in 2003, four-cross racing was big news. It was fresh and new and its elbow-to-elbow dogfights it inspired flashbacks to the early days of BMX racing. More often than not, these races either exploded into carnage or became a procession, but you did get the odd race that was clean and properly competitive.

At that time, there were only a few racers concentrating solely on the discipline and it was still a bit of a free-for-all. Racers like Martin Murray (left) jumped in from BMX and, of course, Steve Peat (right) transferred from downhill. I have no idea who won this race… but come on, does racing get any closer than this?
